We are lucky enough to have a nature expert on our team who regularly gives us updates on the amazing wildlife that surrounds the BSW Head Office…
“Hornets have taken up residence above the door of the staff room, in what I believe was hoped to be an Owl box!
Although many people are scared of Hornets, they are generally docile and have to be quite wound up to sting, although when they do it can be very painful. They have been there a few weeks with no problems. They just fly out of the hole and head straight up into the trees.
Hornets are pretty awesome beasts, predating many flying insects, including wasps and bees. They are a declining species mainly due to people destroying their nests. They are legally protected in Germany but unfortunately we are not so enlightened!
I’ve seen a Kingfisher on the pond at the bottom of Clearwater Lane and our Buzzard family are still flying over the vineyard on a daily basis calling loudly!! There have also been Ducklings and baby Moorhens on the pond over the summer.
Below is a photo of Laurence. He is almost fancy featherless, getting ready for the colder months!”
